Meet OmniROM, a new custom ROM for Android

OmniROM, a new custom ROM for Android, has been made official at BABBQ (Big Android BBQ), by several developers whom you may already know including Chainfire, Xplodwild and Dees_Troy.

In case you’re new to the custom Android ROM playground, you may have not heard of Chainfire’s SuperSU and rooting hacks (including the recent RegionLock Away removal tool for the Galaxy Note 3), Dees_Troy’s TWRP recovery tools used by custom ROM fans or Xplodwild’s Focal camera that was part of the CyanogenMod ROM, and which is currently available as a standalone app in the Play Store.

OmniROM will be available on several devices including the following: Nexus 4, W-Fi and cellular versions of the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 10, Oppo Find 5, Xperia Z and the Xperia Tablet Z. Naturally, in the future support for more devices is expected.

What about OmniROM features? Here are some of the key features of this new custom Android ROM:

  • Flippable Quick Settings
  • Roadrunner mode
  • Multi-window
  • Daydream enhancements
  • Integrated Performance Control
  • Multi-workspace
  • Color-changeable
  • 3D depth Phase Beam

There’s also a website for OmniROM, which should offer more details in the near future. Interestingly, the custom ROM also gets a sub forum on xda-developers, something other custom ROMs don’t have.

Cheap Smartphones: Nokia Lumia

Alternatively, you could reconsider a Nokia Lumia, which you say you found "excellent". The Nokia Lumia 520 is better than the three cheap name-brand Android models mentioned above. It has a faster dual-core processor, and a bigger (4in) screen with more than twice the resolution (480 x 800 pixels). Also, its 8GB memory can be expanded with a microSD card up to 64GB in size.

Amazon.co.uk has the Lumia 520 for £129.95, but you should be able to get one for £10-£20 less on the high street.

You don't like the Lumia's "terrible media player", but there are already some third-party alternatives. For example, you could try the free VK Player, Audio Player Free, DAAP Media Player ($1.99) or Ultimate Media Player (beta), amongst others. The old Zune software was good, so Microsoft may well improve the current player, or Nokia may add a better app.

Fast and Furious 6 Game Android APK

Winning races and completing challenges earns credits. These credits act as one of the in-game currencies and they can be used to purchase nearly everything in the game. Players are given enough credits for a car at the start, and from there they can purchase more as they progress. There are currently about twenty cars available, and only three are available from the beginning. As players win races and advance to different areas of the city, more expensive cars become available. Fast and Furious 6: The Game isn't going to draw in car aficionados with its relatively small array of vehicles, but fans of the movies may enjoy the style and speed of the lineup. Players can also use their in-game credits to purchase upgrades to their available cars. These upgrades improve how the car performs, but any purchase made with credits may take a few minutes to arrive.

Players who don't want to wait can receive their purchase automatically by using gold, the other form of in-game currency, and how Fast and Furious 6: The Game monetizes. Gold can purchase everything credits can, but can also buy design changes and save time. There are various instances where players need to wait due to an energy mechanic  which limits how long a user game session time. Whether they've purchased an upgrade or ran out of fuel, players can continue with the action by spending gold. A little bit of gold can be earned by playing the game but more can be purchased in the shop. Gold pricing ranges from $2.99 to $99.99, although any bundle cheaper than $19.99 won't likely be enough for serious players.

Fast and Furious 6: The Game is a fun experience. There aren't many notable drag racing games on the market, so it still feels somewhat rare. Because it's a licensed title, a lot of players are likely to pass on it before they try, but those who give it a shot are likely to find themselves entertained. It lacks a bit of staying power, partially because it uses a movie license, and partially due to a lack of multiplayer interaction. However, there's still a fun experience that's likely to draw in both racing fans and Fast and Furious fans.

Download Sonic The Hedgehog APK for Android

Attention all those of you who came of age in the 1990s: Sonic the Hedgehog is back and ready for the mobile world of the 21st century.

So get out your old HyperColor T-shirts, pop in that cassette copy of Pearl Jam's "Ten," and get ready to relive the days when kids had actually heard of a company named Sega.

The company this week launched a remastered version of the original Sonic game in the Google Play store for Android, and also announced the next title in the Sonic franchise will be exclusive to perhaps Sega's oldest foe, Nintendo.

The Android version has been optimized for play on mobile devices and allows gamers to play as sidekicks Knuckles or Tails for the first time. It also supports all HID and Xbox controllers and costs $2.99 to download.

According to a release, the upcoming new game, Sonic Lost World, will be available only on Nintendo's Wii U and 3DS systems. Described as a "new action platforming game," Nintendo plans to unveil the next chapter in the Sonic franchise at E3 in June.

"The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

Well, maybe not completely. The two look to be competing in snowboard slopestyle and other chilly events in a new Wii U title also announced this week from Nintendo: Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Bonds of the Skies for Android

Some of my favorite games on Android have been old school RPGs. 9th Dawn was a great experience, and now, Kemco Games, a developer known for making said RPGs on Android, has just released a new title called Bonds of the Skies.

The game seems to have all of the best elements of a retro RPG: great pixelated graphics, fluid combat, an expansive world and a good storyline. The premise of the game is much like every other old school RPG – your town is under attack, everyone is in danger, and it’s up to you and your friends to stop the threat.

Bonds of the Skies has some decent customization options. You’ll be able to customize characters by giving them a certain set of skills. Beyond that, there isn’t a whole lot of customization, but some of the skills that you’re able to customize is actually quite cool.

Combat is, as expected, turn-based, which may be a turnoff for some potential players, but it does seem to be implemented quite nicely. Now, it does seem like the game has microtransactions, which, in most cases, can get very annoying in a lot of games. Thankfully, you can get through the game without using such items. It’s really more of a hat tip to the developers.

All in all, Bonds of Skies seems to be gearing up for a great run on the Play Store. If you’re not familiar with Kemco Games, they’re based in Japan and have produced a wide range of popular titles like Symphony of the Origin, Symphony of Eternity and more.

Undead Soccer for Android

Last month, BulkyPix teased the release of Undead Soccer onto Android, and finally, it’s here. This game is very popular on iOS, as the gameplay is simple and addicting, while it is also good exercise for your finger. In the game, you play as a survivor of some nasty zombie apocalypse-type deal, then with your endless supply of soccer balls and special power ups, you have to kill them all.
