After two new holes in Siberia, the mystery remains

What's happening in the Siberian permafrost? After the first hole discovered in the Yamal Peninsula, two were spotted by reindeer herders in neighboring regions. Scientists have not yet chosen among possible hypotheses, but soil warming in principle frozen, probably plays a role.

Hole No. 2, in the order of their discovery, appeared near the town of Antipayuta on the Gulf of Ob, several hundred kilometers from the first.  Its diameter is about 15 m.  © Press Office of the Governor YaNAO

How many holes? This is the question posed in Siberia for several days. On July 15, the newspaper Siberian Times unveiled images of a curious crater formed in the peninsula Yamal, the "end of the world" in the local dialect, northwest Siberia, washed by the Kara Sea. Opening with clean edges, opening onto a large underground cavity, appeared in the ground which usually remains frozen throughout the year (the permafrost or permafrost in English), not far from one of the largest deposits gas Europe.
